Tradies in Queanbo and district

Ten minutes from Fyshwick and a whole different state. Most Canberra trades work over there happily — but the licensing, the council and the fencing law all change at the border, and that's what catches people out.

An ACT licence is not automatically a NSW licence. Licensed trades — electrical, plumbing, gas, building — are regulated separately either side: Access Canberra in the ACT, NSW Fair Trading over the border. Plenty of local businesses hold both, and there are mutual recognition arrangements, but it isn't automatic and it isn't something to assume. Hiring? Ask which licence covers your address. Quoting? Sort it before you price the job, because your insurance follows your licensing.

What else changes at the border

The council. Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, not the ACT Government. Approvals, waste, tips, tree rules and development consent all go through them.
Dividing fences. NSW has its own dividing fences legislation with its own notice process, and it's not the same as the ACT's. If your fence is a boundary fence in Queanbo, follow the NSW process, not what your mate in Kambah told you.
Home building insurance. NSW requires cover under the Home Building Compensation Scheme for residential building work over a threshold value. Ask about it on anything decent-sized on that side.
Waste disposal. Different facilities, different charges — which shows up straight away in rubbish removal and demolition quotes.
Advertising and quoting. If you work both sides you genuinely need to know both rulebooks. Worth an hour of your time once.

Three fairly different areas

Queanbo, Karabar, Crestwood

Older established housing, a lot of it fifties through eighties. Renovation, fencing, electrical upgrades and rental maintenance, with a big and busy rental market.

Jerra

Nineties and 2000s family homes on decent blocks, plenty of them backing onto reserve. Landscaping, decks, pools, and the first proper round of replacements coming due.

Googong

A new town still going up. Bare-yard landscaping, fencing between fresh boundaries, and builder-defect questions — basically the same job mix as Gunners, on the NSW side.
