What gets posted
Hot water systems
Dead units, rusted-through tanks, no hot water at all. Most Canberra houses run electric storage or gas, and heat pumps turn up more and more on replacements. If yours is over ten years old and weeping from the base, you're usually replacing it, not fixing it.
Leaks
Dripping taps, a toilet that never shuts up, a wet patch under the sink. Then there's the one nobody wants: a leak inside a wall or under the slab, found when the water bill comes in at three times normal.
Blocked drains
Slow shower, gurgling toilet, sewer smell in the yard. Tree roots in old clay pipes are the classic Canberra cause, and the older suburbs round Dicko and Ainslie with the big street trees cop it worst.
Fixtures and renovations
New tapware, toilets, vanities, dishwasher and washing machine connections, and the rough-in for a bathroom or kitchen reno.
What to tell us
- What's actually happening, and since when. "Slow to drain for a month, now backing up" tells a plumber far more than "blocked drain".
- Photos of the fixture, the leak, and for hot water the label on the unit with the brand, model and capacity.
- Gas or electric, and where the unit lives — outside wall, internal cupboard, or up in the roof.
- One fixture or a few? Several at once usually means the trouble's further down the line, not at the fitting.
- Age of the house, and whether the pipes have been done before.
- Whether you've found the meter and turned it off, if it's a leak.
A note on emergency call-out pricing
After-hours plumbing costs more everywhere, and that's not a rort — someone's getting out of bed for you. What you're entitled to is the call-out fee and the hourly rate before anyone drives out, and a heads-up the moment a repair turns into a replacement, rather than finding out on the invoice. Ask both on the phone. Any plumber worth having will tell you straight.
